Goal is too install Windows 7 using a memory stick.

This article assumes you are experienced Windows operator, if you are reading this then I guess you probably are.

Requirements:
Target computer must support Boot from USB memory stick in order for this to work, in most cases a BIOS update will give you this option if you don’t have it already.

Tools you need:
Windows 7 ISO file
Winrar (to extract ISO file)
USB Memory Stick (At least 4GB)
HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool
MBRWizard (version 2b is free)

Step 1
First format your USB Memorystick using the HP USB Disk storage tool using NTFS file system
(you might need to change the Write Cache and Safe removal policy on your memory stick from Quick removal to Performance in order to format your memory stick, Google Write Cache Memory Stick for instructions, however for a quick one, from Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Manager, Disk Manager, right click on Memory Stick and go to properties, Write cache is under Policies tab)

Step 2
Make the partition on USB disk active using the MBRWizard tool,
Use following command to do so:
To see the list of Disks and Partisions, run following command:

MBRWizard.exe /list

Assuming USB disk is under Disk 1, run following command to activate it:

MBRWizard.exe /Disk=1 /Active=1

Step 3
Using Winrar Extract Windows 7 ISO content into USB memory stick (directly and not under any folder)

Step 4, final step
From My Computer open the USB memory stick (assuming E drive),
go to: E:\boot\
Copy bootsect.exe to C:\BootMaker\

Open a command prompt window and type:

C:\BootMaker\bootsect.exe /nt60 e:

And your bootable Windows 7 memory stick is now ready to use!

Yesterday after inspecting a server and reviewing their complaints regarding number of Spams they receive, considering the fact that they can’t afford a paid AntiSpam subscription I ended up installing a free AntiSpam (SpamAssassin) on their Exchange server (on Windows SBS 2003)

Installing it for the first time I had some trouble but all were solved quickly so here I’ll write up a quick summary of what needs to be done, some kind of setup guide

Before starting, I know there are heaps of install guides around but most of them require you to install packages like Perl on the server and do some time consuming configurations, the guide I’m going to offer however will be a much quicker way of doing it (thanks to the people linked bellow)

In order to begin the installation, you’ll need following packages:

Exchange SpamAssassin SMTP Sink
get it from here, download the setup file

SpamAssassin for Win32
get it from here.

Installation guide:

Install Exchange SpamAssasin SMTP Sink in location bellow
note: do nut run the script after/during installation

C:\ESA

Extract SpamAssassin for Win32 in the same location “
C:\ESA
”

Create following batch file

C:\ESA\AntiSpam.bat

its content:

@c:\esa\spamassassin.exe %*

Edit the file
C:\ESA\ExchangeSpamAssassin.ini

find the line:

SpamAssassin_Batch_File=C:\Perl\bin\spamassassin.bat

replace it with:

SpamAssassin_Batch_File=C:\ESA\AntiSpam.bat

Run
C:\ESA\Install_ESA_Sink.bat
file and you are done!

You can view the logs in

C:\ESA\Logs\

For more information, read the docs, enjoy!

Today I was trying to rip an online radio and create a local archive for myself, after searching in internet I found StreamRipper to be the best candidate for what I want considering I wanted something that I can run on my CentOs VPS server.

However while installing the latest version (1.64.6 at the time of this post), I hit an error with GLIB not being the right version or not correctly installed, I tried couple of tricks to solve this problem including re-installing the GLIB or trying to update it which at the end didn’t make any difference

So I started trying my luck with different versions of StreamRipper, while with some of them I passed the ./configure part the make and make install always failed, at the end however, I could finally find the version that worked for me which was version 1.62.0

Here is how to install it:

wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/streamripper/files/streamripper%20%28older%20unix%29/1.62.0/streamripper-1.62.0.tar.gz/download

gzip -dc streamripper-1.62.0.tar.gz | tar xf -

cd streamripper-1.62.0

./configure

make

make install

How to use:

streamripper http://SampleShoutCastStream.com:8000

How to stop the ripping:

pkill streamripper

Where is the recorded stream?

cd Streamripper_rips/

Tips:

If the stream URL contains characters like “?”, “=” or “&”, escape them with “\”.

After trying to install rar/unrar in my dedicated Linux box(CentOS 4) I encountered different kind of problems and after googleing around found different solutions, none of them applicable to me or either I didn’t want to screw things around much

first I tried yum install rar, which didn’t work due to using wrong repo (didn’t bother trying to change the repo)

tried apt-get install rar, didn’t work either due to not having apt-get

now the solution I found,

just download the latest RAR Linux version from rarlab website: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

wget http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlinux-3.7.1.tar.gz

extract the archive using the following command:

gzip -dc rarlinux-3.7.1.tar.gz | tar xf -

go into the extracted directory, cd rar

now as you might have experienced you may get the error of not having glibc_2.4, here is the work around, do the following

to extract a file, just try the following command:

./rar_static e rarfile.rar

for more switches and option try:

./rar_static –help

First, you need the bzip2 package. Get it from your favourite FTP site if you haven’t already got one. Next, to view the contents, simply do this:

$ bzip2 -cd files.tar.bz2 | tar tvf -

To extract, do this instead:

$ bzip2 -cd files.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -

Of course, you can also use something like:

"tar --use-compress-program bzip2 -xvf files.tar.bz2"

. Please “man tar” and “man bzip2″ for further information, and you might also want to read up the Bzip2 mini-HOWTO. By the way, the Bzip2 home page is at http://www.muraroa.demon.co.uk/.
